As April approaches, it brings spring with it, a time to stretch our legs, refresh ourselves and maybe even sprout a new leaf. This month invites us to engage with our communities, honor diverse cultures and explore our creative sides. From volunteer opportunities to celebrating the arts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

April reminds us to prioritize not only our community connections, but also our wellbeing and the planet we share. With numerous observances that recognize important causes and celebrate the joys of everyday life, let’s dive into what this vibrant month has in store!

People and culture

This observance encourages us to learn about their rich history and contemporary achievements, fostering inclusivity and appreciation. Likewise, the 8th is International Romani Day, an opportunity to recognize the history and rights of Romani people worldwide.

The entire month of April is recognized as National Volunteer Month, with the 19th through the 25th assigned as National Volunteer Week, during which we are reminded of the power of giving back, inspiring us to dedicate our time and energy to meaningful causes in our communities. (Consider hosting dedicated volunteer opportunities in your employees’ local communities and give your people the opportunity to sign up for time slots that work for their schedules, so that meaningful work gets done both in and out of the office.

The 18th is World Heritage Day, where we reflect on and protect our shared cultural heritage, while the 15th is National ASL Day, a day to celebrate American Sign Language and promote accessibility.

April 15th is World Art Day.National Poetry Month offers a chance to explore the beauty of poetry, whether through writing or enjoying favorites from renowned poets, and World Art Day on the 15th is a timely reminder to appreciate the impact of art on our world, as well as the artists in our lives.

Consider including some relevant fun facts in your internal comms this month. You could invite your employees to share their favorite poems or poets, or even host a small internal poetry contest.

  • 8th - National Zoo Lovers’ Day
  • 11th - National Pet Day
  • 17th - National Bat Appreciation Day

Sports lovers also get a shoutout in April, with National Baseball Day on the 22nd, and World Table Tennis Day following behind on the 23rd.

We kick off the month with National Walking Day on the 1st – an ideal time to step outside, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy nature’s beauty. (And maybe play a light prank while you’re out, since it is also April Fools’ Day.)

As the month unfolds, we recognize World Parkinson’s Day on the 11th, promoting awareness and support for those affected by the disease. During the 24th - 30th, World Immunization Week, we observe an invaluable opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of vaccines and their role in keeping us healthy and safe.

Professional acknowledgements and celebrations

April is full of observances to celebrate libraries and the people who keep them running.April is recognized as School Library Month, and the American Library Association sponsors National Library Week in the 19th - 25th. But among these periods, we also highlight:
