What is Employee Engagement?
The layers of workplace engagement, powered by the Engagement Bridge™

We started Reward Gateway more than 13 years ago. A handful of people with little money, and a dream to make the world a better place to work. On tiny budgets, we invented creative ways to attract, engage, and retain the people that would build a great company. We created employee benefits, employee recognition and communication solutions for our clients, and ourselves. As these gained traction, the company grew bringing new clients, new unique employee engagement challenges to solve, and new products to build.

During a decade of helping 1,800 clients in 23 countries we gained a deep understanding of company culture, employee engagement and the tools, techniques and practices that companies use to build meaningful connections with their people. Through this work we developed the Engagement Bridge, the model that guides 400+ Reward Gateway employees. Product development and client success are grounded by the Bridge™. It’s even the basis for our company logo.

The Engagement Bridge is explained in the book “Build It: The Rebel Playbook for Employee Engagement”, published by Wiley in February 2018. With seven layers plus three supporting elements, the Engagement Bridge is the practical model for building employee engagement. Learn more in the video below:

An engaged employee is someone who:

Understands and believes in the direction the organisation is going.

Understands how their role affects and contributes to the organisation’s purpose, mission and objectives.

Genuinely wants the organisation to succeed, and feels shared success with the organisation.

Engaged employees create value for organisations in three key ways

Multiple studies show that companies with engaged workforces outperform their peers in stock market returns by over 2x. Engaged employees build better, stronger, more resilient organisations. They do this in three key ways:

Engaged employees make better decisions for their companies and clients because they understand more.

Engaged employees are more productive because they like or love what they are doing.

Engaged employees innovate more because they deeply want their organisation to succeed.

Employee engagement is your choice, let's get started

Employee engagement is a choice that any organisation can make. You choose to embrace it, to prioritise it and to invest in it because you understand the value that engaged employees will bring to your organisation.

You can’t force employee engagement, but your actions strongly influence it. You can create a culture and an environment where more and more individual employees choose to become engaged every day. Your actions enable individual employees to make the personal choice to connect and commit because they believe in you and what you are doing. No two organisations are the same and therefore the priorities and opportunities you have will be unique to you. The Engagement Bridge™ model will help you decide where to start and what to work on next.

Ultimately, employee engagement is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s not easy and there is no quick fix, but it is the most valuable work you can do with your biggest and most expensive strategic asset - your people. And we’ve also learned that it’s not binary - your organisation doesn’t pass or fail. So wherever you are, wherever you are starting from, investing in employee engagement with the Engagement Bridge model will have a positive impact. It’s the direction and speed of travel that’s important, not how far you are along the path.
